Meeting Format
Montreal on Rails’ monthly meetings take place on the evening (7-9) of the first Tuesday of every month. These meet-ups are structured (roughly) as follows:
- 1st Presentation
- short break
- 2nd Presentation
- Open-Forum Q&A Period
About the Presentations
Each presentation is planned to last 30-40 minutes, with some short time for questions throughout/after.
The goal is to have presentations be as interesting as possible for working RoR developers, i.e. showing code is a good thing! A focus on “tutorial-style” presentations will be encouraged: less emphasis on pure demonstration, more on how how-to-construction. “This is how I did X…” or “Check out this cool way to do Y” or “This is how I made Z go much faster”. You get the idea. Also, the presentation slot does not have to be allocated to a single topic, but could instead lend itself to a series of tips & tricks if that format works better for the material in question.
Further, over time we’d like to see a nice balance between presentations aimed toward advanced users and those aimed at beginners. We want to at once keep pushing the leading edge of RoR practice, but also bring new, interested people into the fold.
About the Open Forum Q&A Period
If you’re developing in RoR, you likely have some nagging issue(s) or question(s) that you just can’t seem to resolve. Come armed with them to each meet up! It’s the perfect opportunity to pick the brain of Montreal’s most l33t development squad. Simply pitch your problem to the group; we’ll all discuss informally and hopefully point you in the right direction.
